Importing Standards from a Spreadsheet
Overview
The standards are made available and shared through a Google group. This user's group is a mailing list only, created by Montville Township Public Schools for sharing this information. The standards are available in downloadable files that can be imported into Genesis for use with Lesson Planner, Gradebook, and more. They are being shared with other districts free of charge, and you may download a copy of the latest standards at any time. Read the following guide for more details on how to retrieve them and import into your Genesis system.

Download the shared NJ Standards
- Visit www.montville.net/genesisnjstandards to access the shared files
- Locate the latest "Genesis NJ Standards .zip" file and download to your computer
- To download, right-click the file and then click the "Download" option
- Unzip the compressed folder so you can access each of the Excel documents within
- Review each standard spreadsheet inside and decide which file(s) to import into your Standards module
- Please contact [email protected] for questions about accessing the files or the standards found within the files

Import the shared NJ Standards
The following requires you to import .xlsx spreadsheets using the templates formatted by Genesis. This template contains columns such as "Standard Set" and "SetCode" and each row represents a single standard. Click Here to download a blank template file.
If you downloaded shared NJ standards files, they are formatted to this template already.
- Make sure you have your standards file(s) ready
- Log into Genesis and visit the Standards module
- Go to Standards > Setup > Standards screen, then scroll down to Import Standards from a Spreadsheet
- Click Browse or Choose File to locate the import file on your computer. Select the file in the file explorer
- The name of the selected file should appear next to the Choose File button

- After reviewing the imported standards, you must check off Display to make the standards set available to teachers. Do this by clicking the modify button on the standards set that was imported. Then enable the Display Set? checkbox and click Save. Repeat this step once per each standards file imported. Display Set can also be unchecked to remove access from a standards set that's no longer in use.

Update or Replace shared NJ Standards
The following applies when importing a standards file into an existing set of standards. It is important to review the SetCode column within your import spreadsheet, and determine if the code listed already matches an existing Standards Set code in Genesis. This Code can be seen on the Standards > Setup > Standards screen in Genesis. If the SetCode being imported matches an existing set's Code in Genesis, there are two methods for importing which you must decide prior to Step #6 above:
Update/Append: By default, the system will update or append the existing standards set. This means that the import will not delete existing standards. It will only update the standards in Genesis with any changes to the verbiage or other standard fields. In addition, the import will create new standards in the system if it does not already exist. To use the Update/Append mode, leave the Replace Mode box unchecked when importing.
Replace Mode: The existing standards set will be completely erased prior to importing the new version of the set. This will result in only the standards from the file being added to the standards set. To import using this method, check off the Replace Mode box prior to importing the file.
Shared Standards FAQ
Q: How are Standards imported?
A: The Standards module has several ways to upload new standards:
Read the article above on how to import the SHARED NJ standards.

Q: I'm new to the Standards module, what is it and why is it used?
A: The Standards module is where curriculum standards are managed in the Genesis database. The standards used here can be mandated by the state or developed by the district for local use. Teaching/learning standards that are added here become available for entire district, and are used in modules such as the Gradebook and Lesson Planner. Teachers and administrators can also review Standards Coverage to see the standards in use.

Q: Why doesn't Genesis maintain the standards automatically?
A: New Jersey State Standards updates are distributed by a long-standing customer of Genesis: Montville Township School District. These updates are provided free of charge to the entire community of Genesis districts.
As new Standards are released, the updates often include structural changes to the data that require a concerted effort to implement. In addition, each of the subjects containing standards are structured in a different way. Genesis would need to charge a significant amount to be able to devote sufficient staff to supply standards updates in a timely fashion.
The team at Montville makes these updates free of charge, with importable packages that are easily uploaded directly into the Genesis Standards module.
