Grading Schemes

Grading Schemes are applied to Student Schedules in Genesis and affect the weighting of a student's grade based on that scheme.

This makes it possible for two students taking the same course to receive different weighting.

The most common use for Grading Schemes is when a district switches weighting policy but does not want the change to affect all students.

Setup

Setup for Grading Schemes occurs in the Grading > Setup > Grading Schemes tab. Simply choose a code and description. Keep in mind a Grading Scheme is assigned to a single Genesis school for an individual school year.

Grading Scheme Propagation

You will need to create a Grading Scheme Rule for each Grading scheme. You will also need to assign an alternate weighting set for courses participating in the scheme.

Grading Scheme Rule

Rules are created from the Grading > Setup > Grading Schemes > Scheme Rules tab. You will need to create a Rule for each scheme you create.

The function of a rule is to assign a Scheme to student's schedules. In turn, the Scheme Code on a student's schedule tells the system which weighting set to use when grading that students scheduled course.

Rules can be based on the following criteria; Class of, Grade Level and Course Code. Rules can be setup for a single criteria (such as Class Of) or for a combination (such as Class of AND Course Code).

If you do not wish either Class Of, Grade Level, or Course code to factor into the rule, simply leave the column blank on rule creation.

How Rules are Applied

Once a Scheme Rule has been created, the system will automatically apply the scheme code to a students scheduled course any time a course is scheduled for a student.

This happens both at the time a scheduled course is added and also on a nightly basis (in case courses are imported by a third party product or function). The only time a scheduled course that meets the rule criteria is NOT updated, is if a scheme has been individually (manually) set for a particular student. In this case, the scheduled course is considered locked.

Rules are applied in Sequence order. If a student meets the criteria of the lowest numbered rule, the system will not continue checking other rules the student may qualify for.

You may forcibly push schemes onto student schedules as well from the Scheme Rules page by hitting the "Push Scheme to Student Schedules" button. This will push the scheme to all schedules meeting the rule criteria EVEN IF the schedule is locked.

You may view the number of individual scheduled courses assigned a rule from the Grading > Setup > Grading Schemes tab.

Assigning Scheme Weights to Courses

Once a Scheme has been created, each Curriculum Course object will now display a separate section for that schemes weighting (Scheduling -> Curriculum -> Modify Course).

If you wish the course to have a separate weight for students assigned to that Scheme, simply fill in the GPA Weight Code and GPA Weight for that scheme.

Assigning Scheme to a Numeric Quality Point Conversion table

If your district employs a Numeric Quality Point Conversion table, you may use this in conjunction with a grading scheme.  Each Scheme can have it own version of the Numeric Quality Point Conversion chart.

So your default scheme, for example, could be set to assign 4 Q.P. for numeric grades in the 90-100 range while your new scheme assigns 4.5 Q.P. for he same range.

Grading Scheme Application

When a grade is posted for a student, the system will first check that students schedule to see if a scheme has been set for the scheduled course.

If so, the system will then check the Curriculum Course (and or the Numeric QP Conversion chart is one is used) to see if a separate weighting set has been assigned to that scheme.

If so, the system will calculate the grade using those weights.
