Purpose
The Pass/Fail Grading setup allows you to setup how you would like grading to work for students who are receiving Pass and Fail grades for a course. The setup allows you to select the grades that will count as Passing and Failing and then allows you to select an overall Passing and Failing grade that will be automatically assigned to a student. A passing grade will be given to the student if they have more or the same number of passing grades than failing grades for the course. The automatic grading can assign a S1, S2 or Final Grade to the students.
Setup
The setup screen for Pass/Fail Grading is found on the Grading - Setup - Valid Grades - Pass/Fail Setup screen. This screen allows you to setup which collections should be automatically calculated along with the grades that are applied to the Pass/Fail calculation.
In order for student to receive the Passing or Failure grade that you select, the student must have only received grades that are selected for the calculation. For instance, if the setup only includes P and F grades for the Pass/Fail calculations, only students who receive those grades for all MP's for a course will be included in the calculation. If a student receives any other grade, the student will go through the normal grading logic for automatic calculations.
Here are the fields that can be setup:
Field | Description |
---|---|
Auto Calculate S1 Grade | If checked, the grading logic will look to automatically calculate an S1 grade using the Pass/Fail Grades. |
Auto Calculate S2 Grade | If checked, the grading logic will look to automatically calculate an S2 grade using the Pass/Fail Grades. |
Auto Calculate FG Grade | If checked, the grading logic will look to automatically calculate a FG using the Pass/Fail Grades. |
Passing MP Grade(s) | These are the grades that can be posted by a teacher for a marking period that represent when a student has passed the class. These grades should only be used for students who are to receive a Pass or Fail. |
Failing MP Grade(s) | These are the grades that can be posted by a teacher for a marking period that represent when a student has failed the class. These grades should only be used for students who are to receive a Pass or Fail. |
No MP Grade(s) | These are the grades that can be posted by a teacher for a marking period that represent when a student is not receiving a grade. This can be used when a student is out for medical leave or when a student joins the class late in the MP. |
Grade to post for Passing | When automatically calculating a S1, S2 or FG, this grade will be the one that is posted if the student is determined to have passed. |
Grade to post for Failing | When automatically calculating a S1, S2 or FG, this grade will be the one that is posted if the student is determined to have failed. |
Determining the S1, S2 or Final Grade
The calculation to determine an automatically assigned Passing or Failing grade is straight forward and simple. If a student receives the same number of more passing grades than failing grades for a course, they will be given the Passing Grade for the course. If they have more Failing grades than Passing, the student will be given the Failing grade.
In order for student to be automatically assigned a Pass or Fail grade, they must have one of the Passing, Failing or No Grade MP grades in all marking periods for the class.
Examples
Calculating a FG grade that uses MP1, MP2, MP3 and MP4 grades. In this example, P has been checked for Passing, F has been selected for Failing and NG has been selected for No Grade. The "Grade to post for Passing" is a P while the "Grade to post for Failing" is an F.
MP1: P (Passing)
MP2: P (Passing)
MP3: F (Failing)
MP4: F (Failing)
The above would calculate a P, because there are 2 passing MP grades which is the same number of failing grades. If we change the MP2 grade an F, the student would receive an F, because the student now has more failing grades than passing.
Now lets change the grades to include Not Graded grade.
MP1: P (Passing)
MP2: P (Passing)
MP3: NG (Not Graded)
MP4: F (Failing)
In this scenario, the student would be given a Passing grade because there are 2 passing grades and only 1 failing grade. The NG grade is ignored when counting the passing vs failing grades. If MP2 were changed to an F, then the student would be assigned a F grade because there wold be 2 failing grades vs only 1 passing grade.
