Overview

The Gradebook includes the ability to define Rubrics, print them, print a copy for each student, and link them to Assignments and grade them.

The Rubrics, as now implemented, are linked to the Gradebook and cannot exist apart from a Gradebook.

NoteRubrics cannot be edited once they are attached to an assignment.

A Gradebook's set of Rubrics is listed on the Gradebook>Rubrics>List Rubrics screen:

Creating and Modifying Rubrics

Add a Rubric

To add a Rubric to your Gradebook, click on the "Create Rubric" tab under "Rubrics".

This brings up a screen on which you can directly create a new Rubric:

  1. Enter the "Rubric Description"
  2. Select the "Number of Qualities" from the drop down (e.g. 4).  This determines the number of columns in the Rubric matrix.   When you select the number, that many fields will appear in the list below.  The default is 4 Qualities.
  3. Enter a description and a Value for each Quality.
  4. Select the number Criteria (i.e. Rows) from the Number of Criteria drop down.  This determines the number of rows in the Rubric matrix.  When you select the number, that many fields appear below.  The default is 4 criteria.  The Descriptions will be used as the column headers for the Rubric's matrix.
  5. Enter a Description for each of the Criteria.   The Criteria will be used as the left side row labels for the Rubric's matrix.
  6. Click the "Next Step" button when all Qualities and Criteria have been filled in.  This brings up the "Populate Rubric with Data" screen:
  7. Each empty cell is a text field.  You can type directly into each cell.
  8. When you are done, click the "Save Rubric" button.   To go back and adjust the Qualities and Criteria, click the "Previous Step" button.
  9. When you click "Save Rubric" the Rubric editor will exit and you will be returned to the List Rubrics screen.

Rubric Actions

There are up to six icon function buttons that appear on the right side of the List Rubrics screen:

Printing the Rubric

Clicking the  PDF icon creates and displays a PDF file with a single copy of the Rubric in it:

The "Student Name" field of the rubric (top right) is blank.

This is displayed in Adobe Acrobat Reader and can be printed from there.

Printing a Rubric for Each Student

Clicking the icon creates a single large PDF file with one empty page of the rubric per student.

This allows you to individually "paper" grade a page for each student or simply to hand out each student's page to them.

No answers or responses are printed on the page:  just the Rubric.

The "Student Name" field of each page of the generated file is filled in with a student's name.

The pages are arranged in alphabetical order by student name.

This is displayed in Adobe Acrobat Reader and can be printed from there.

Copying Rubrics to All My Gradebooks

Clicking the  copy icon brings up a dialog with a list of all your other Gradebooks:

To copy the Rubric to other Gradebooks, check the checkboxes.

When you have selected all the Gradebooks you wish to copy it to, click the "Copy" button.

Exporting the Rubric

Rubrics can be exported and imported.  This lets you send Rubrics to other districts and receive Rubrics from other districts.

To export a Rubric, click the  "export" icon.  This creates a file with the name of the Rubric and a '.gz' extension in your Downloads directly.

Editing the Rubric

If a Rubric has not yet been used to grade an Assignment, it can be edited and altered:  once it has been used, it will be locked and you will need to copy it in order to make changes.

When a Rubric can be edited, the edit button will appear for it. Click this to return to the "Modify Rubric" screens.

Deleting the Rubric

If a Rubric has not yet been used to grade an Assignment, it can be edited and altered:  once it has been used, it will be locked and you will need to copy it in order to make changes.

When a Rubric can be edited, the delete trashcan icon button will appear for it.  Click this to permenantly delete the Rubric.
