Parent Portal Guide

Genesis is adding the ability to push notifications to users on subscribed devices based on Message Center Alerts

Overview:

• These alerts are only sent when a parent receives a new message in their Alert Center within Parent Portal
  • The notifications themselves are real time, the only limiting factor is when the Alert Center receives the message. Please see your Notification Daemon or Notification Daemon (Scheduled) tasks to configure any messages that are sent via task to be sent at the appropriate times for your district.
• Works on desktop, chromebook, tablet, and mobile devices
• For mobile devices to ensure consistent notifications, users should have the site installed on their device
  • Android - Will have either an installation prompt, or users can go to Install App within the parent portal
  • iPhone - Users can add the application to homescreen, this is the only way on iPhone for users to receive/enable notifications at the moment
• Devices must support PWA push notifications
  • iPhone -  must be version 16.4 and up, will not work on earlier versions, and website must be added to the users homescreen

Genesis Setup

• A new flag has been added to roles called Receive Push Notifications
  • 
• When enabled parents with that role will be able to subscribe to push notifications within the portal through the settings screen, and the notifications will go out to them.
• Additionally, the "Genesis URL:" field must be filled out in Setup -> Districts -> Master District Parameters -> Logon Screen. The value filled in here must the url up to and not including /sis. For example, https://genesis.genesisedu.com/district is a valid url to input here.

Other

• Notifications are logged on Parents -> Setup -> Push Notifications where they can be searched for by error or parent user login id
• If a notification fails to send, the Push Notification Resend Task can be set to run to resend these notifications, however notifications will only be resent by this task up to 5 times. After this there will be no further attempts to send that notification.
