Adding Assignments
An assignment can be added to your Gradebook by going into Gradebook>Assignments>Add Assignment or by clicking on the "Add Assignment" quick link from your Gradebook>Gradebook>Assignment Spreadsheet screen.
The Add Assignment screen contains many fields and we will go over all of them in this document.
We will first start with any field that is required in order for the Assignment to be created.
Required Fields
Field | Description |
Assignment Name | This is the name that you would like to give to the assignment. This is the description that is seen on your reports and in the parent module. |
Column Header | This field is automatically populated when you give your assignment a name. This is shown as the column header on the Gradebook>Gradebook>Assignment Spreadsheet screen. The maximum amount of characters for this field is 15. |
Marking Period | This is the marking period that this assignment is part of. The marking period will default to the school's current marking period. |
Category | This is the category for the assignment. Please see Categories for category help. |
Grade Type | This is the type of grading that you would like to do for the assignment. Genesis provides you with 8 different options: Numeric, Alphabetic, Checks, O-S-U, Pass-Fail, Not Graded (Yes/No), Not Graded (Text) and Extra Credit. This field is defaulted to the Grading Type that you defined on the category. |
Max Possible Score | This is how much the assignment is worth. This field is defaulted to the max points that you defined on the category. |
Assignment Weight | This field defines how much weight you would like to give to the assignment. If the assignment is worth 100 points and you make the weight 2.0, then the assignment will be worth 200 points for Grading purposes. If you make it 1.5, then the assignment is worth 150. |
For Parents Module | This field does what it says. If it is set to Yes, then the assignment is shown in the Parent Module. If this is set to No, then this assignment is only for you! |
For Gradebook | This controls whether an assignment you create is shown on the Gradebook>Gradebook>Assignment Spreadsheet screen. There may be times when you want to publish an assignment to the Parents Module, but not see it in your every day Gradebook. |
Optional Fields
Field | Description |
Seq | This is the sequence of your assignments. If you prefer to order your assignments without a due date, you can fill in this field for sorting. Please see the Preferences screen to show you how to get this field to automatically sequence. |
Group | This field is populated by the Workgroups that you have created in your profile. Please see the Workgroups screen to show you this fields best uses. |
Description | This is the long description that you can give to the assignment. This description is shown on the Parent Module if you have filled it in. If you leave this field blank, then the ASssignment Name is displayed. |
Assigned Date | By default, this is the date that you created the assignment. You can change this value to your desired date. |
Due Date | By default, this is the date that you created the assignment. You can change this value to your desired date. |
Assignment Unit | This is the unit that the assignment is part of. Please see the Units screen for help with Units. |
Label and URL | The label and URL fields allow a teacher to show a link on the Parent Portal for an assignment. For instance, If you were to enter ESPN for the label, and www.espn.com in the URL field, then "ESPN" would show on the parent portal which would link to www.espn.com when clicked. |
Linking your new assignment to your other Gradebooks
If you teacher more than one class, you will have multiple Gradebooks. Many times, these Gradebooks contain similar, if not identical, assignments.
We take care of this for you by giving you a list of your gradebooks on the Gradebook>Assignments>Add Assignment screen.
By checking these Gradebooks, you are telling Genesis that you would like to create the assignments for your other Gradebooks.
When you hit "Save" button, the assignments are created automatically and now have a permanent link between them.
Editing Assignments
An assignment can be edited by going into Gradebook>Assignments>Assignment List and clicking on the "Modify" icon in the right hand column or by clicking on the Assignment Name in the Gradebook>Gradebook>Assignment Spreadsheet screen.
The Gradebook>Assignments>Modify Assignment allows you to edit or delete your assignment.
The screen contains the same fields as the Add Assignment screen.
However, there are some slight differences in behavior that we will cover in this section.
Field | Description |
Due Date | If this field is changed to date outside of your selected Marking Period for the assignment, then a alert box shows you the date range of your selected marking period and what marking period the new due date falls in. You will have to change the due date or the marking period in order to save the assignment changes. |
Grade Type | The Grade Type of the assignment can be changed once the assignment is created. However, there are two major restrictions in place to prevent your grades from getting out of whack.
|
Max Possible Score | This field can be changed to any other value. When changed, the Gradebook will ask you if you would like to refactor all the assignment grades that are associated with the assignment. In short, if you are changing an assignment value from 100 to 10 points and a student scored a 85, then the refactor logic would change the stduent's grade to a 8.5. |
Note: Please be aware that changes made to Marking Period, Grading Type, or Max Possible Points will trigger the Gradebook to recalculate all of your students Marking Period Grades. |
How do assignment changes affect your linked assignments?
There is a "Update Linked Assignments? (Save or Delete):" checkbox on right below a listing of all the linked assignments.
- If this is checked, then all the assignments that are listed as linked will be updated with the changes.
- If this is not checked, then only the assignment you are working on is effected.
Another checkbox is labeled "Remove Link".
- If checked and then the assignment is saved, then the link is removed between the assignment that you are working on all of the other assignments.
